Menstruation is a normal monthly process in which blood flows from the uterus, marking the beginning of a girl’s reproductive maturity. The menstrual cycle involves phases of bleeding, preparation, ovulation, and renewal, and may be irregular in early years. Proper hygiene, pain management, and accurate information are essential for healthy menstruation. Although menstruation signals fertility, it does not mean readiness for sex or marriage.
This book, which has been appropriately titled Essential Maternal & Neonatal Care Clinical Guidelines for Uganda, is expected to be a reinforcement of the Safe Motherhood Life Saving Skills (LSS) program, the Pregnancy, Childbirth and Postnatal Care (PCPNC), Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Training Curriculum, the National Adolescent Health Policy, The Reproductive Health Service Guidelines for Family Planning and Maternal Health Services Delivery, the Midwives Handbook, the Guide to Practice and several others.
The Government of Uganda has prioritised the promotion and practice of family planning as part of a strategy to achieve the national goal of increasing household incomes and improved quality of life of Ugandans. The FP-CIP II, was developed to provide a strategic direction for family planning programming and elaborates how the multi-sectoral approach will play a role in not only addressing the fertility concerns, but also ensure quality family planning services and information for women and men of reproductive age.
This Family Planning (FP) Research and Learning Agenda presents a great opportunity for the country to tailor future research to respond to key FP evidence gaps; synthesize, package, and promote the use of existing evidence to ensure future investments are evidence-based; harmonize stakeholder efforts; and strengthen monitoring of progress towards making FP programs more equitable, cost-effective, and client-centered

The Family Planning monthly performance update for December 2021 and 2021 annual highlights has been compiled using our service statistics data (DHIS 2) as one of the principal instruments to monitor program performances. Reporting rates for December greatly improved compared to November, there was a decline in the Reporting rates on time but achieved the national target. Stock-out of Injectable contraceptives modestly reduced from 13.6% (November) to 13% in December.
We continue to see more expiries of Injectable contraceptives happening at lower levels of care, especially HCIIs. We registered a decrease in the couple of years of protection in December compared to November. A decline in the number of integrated SRHR outreaches was registered in December.
Overall, Implant use is growing, and the country’s method mix is expanding. More institutional deliveries per 100 women of reproductive age were high among ≤ 24-year-old mothers contributing 52%.
Reporting rate for November declined compared to October, as well as Reporting rate on time. Reporting rate by level of care were above target at only HCIVs and RRHs.Stock-out of Injectable contraceptives was 13.6% (a modest increase of 0.6% (about 1019 facilities)) compared to October. We continue to see more expiries of Injectable contraceptives happening at HCIIs.
We registered an increase in the number of integrated SRHR outreaches. Uptake of post-partum family planning intervention remained low when compared to other reproductive maternal services. More institutional deliveries per 100 women of reproductive age were high among ≤ 24-year-old mothers contributing about 51%.
The 2021 Progress Estimates on Family Planning Commitments and National Goals estimates were derived; In order to have an accurate representation of FP progress. The current data have been incorporated with the data that has been generated over the last few years in order to monitor the annual progress of Family Planning Estimation Tool (FPET).
The development, review and production of the National Condom Programming Strategy has been achieved through wide consultations with various stakeholders at National, District and Community levels. This activity was directed through the AIDS Control Programme (STD/ACP), in close collaboration with the Reproductive Health Division of the Ministry of Health.
This wheel contains the medical eligibility criteria for starting use of contraceptive methods. It is based on Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use, 3rd edition (2004) and its 2008 Update, one of WHO’s evidence-based guidelines. It tells family planning providers if a woman presenting with a known medical or physical condition is able to usevarious contraceptive methods safely and effectively.
This report contains the findings of the study on ‘Factors that Influence Decisions to Seek Medical Male Circumcision (MMC) Services’ commissioned by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg University – Health Communication Partnership (HCP) with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The fieldwork for the study was conducted in December 2009. The purpose of this study was to establish the factors that influence the decisions of young men to seek medical male circumcision.
