The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a new virus that had not been previously identified in humans and therefore no population-level immunity exists. This virus belongs to the coronaviridae family grouped together in 1968 due to existence of crown-like appearances on their cell membrane. The virus is highly transmissible by way of droplet infections attacking the respiratory, intestinal and brain tissues. Infection from SARS-CoV-2 results in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) which manifests along a spectrum ranging from mild to severe symptoms; in severe cases, death can occur due to complication from the disease.

The Corona Virus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) has continued to spread across the world leaving death and economic devastation in its wake. Although the number of confirmed cases in Uganda remain very low in comparison to other countries, the containment adopted to curb the spread of the virus have affected business operations. This report, based on a survey of firms using the Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC)’s business climate index (BCI) methodology, examines the effect of the risk presented by COVID-19 pandemic on Uganda’s businesses.

Eighty-nine percent (49/55) are imported cases, 9% (5/55) are local transmissions while 4% (2/55) have an unknown chain of transmission.
