The Ministry of Health recognizes that access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in health facilities is critical in the reduction of diseases, improved occupational health, more efficient health care services, improved staff morale and performance. The micro planning data generated will guide line ministries, local government authorities and development partners to position WASH in the health care facilities agenda within the Water and Health sectors. Additionally, it will support the development of a roadmap for achieving WASH-related sustainable development goals for health institutions.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3 and SDG 6 reinforce the need to ensure adequate WASH services, which will result in a reduction in maternal mortality, ending preventable newborn deaths, and providing quality universal health coverage. The rationale of the WASH guidelines is to document procedures and provide a framework for strategic planning, implementation of functional and effective WASH services in healthcare facilities in Uganda. These guidelines offer a basis for creating the minimum conditions required for providing healthcare services in a healthy environment for healthcare workers, patients and visitors to the healthcare premises. They also serve as a tool for monitoring the performance of WASH in health care facilities.
The government is gradually prioritizing rehabilitation and assistive technology services in health system as an essential healthcare service that is integral in the attainment of the universal health coverage goal of leave no one behind and sustainable development Goal 3. The Uganda rapid assistive technology assessment (rATA) report has been developed by the ministry of health with technical assistance from WHO and financial support from USAID ReLAB-HS activity that is strengthening rehabilitation and assistive technology (AT) in the health system in Uganda. The findings and recommendations from the Uganda rapid assistive technology assessment (rATA) report will guide the development of the first national rehabilitation and assistive technology strategic plan and the first assistive technology priority list (APL) which will help to streamline the rehabilitation and assistive technology agenda in Uganda.
This brief provides an overview of; OPD attendance, notifiable diseases, other diseases of public health interest and causes of death.OPD attendance,maternal and neonatal deaths increased during the week. There was an increase in both malaria cases and deaths compared to the previous week (week 17) , there was decrease in the number of Measles and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection cases while New & Relapse TB cases increased. The reporting rate was 77.8%.The number of people who visited the OPD increased by 13%. (702,335 in week 18 Vs 619,331 in week 17). Ninety-two percent of the patients were new.During the week, 19 maternal deaths were reported, which is higher than the number reported in week 17. 6/19 of the deaths were reported in Kampala. Bushenyi, Butambala, Gulu, Kasese, Kiryandongo, Lamwo, and Masaka districts each reported two deaths, whereas Bushenyi, Butambala, Gulu, Kasese, Kiryandongo, Lamwo, and Masaka Districts each reported one maternal death.
To date the country has registered 164,118 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 3,596 deaths. Furthermore, there is a massive drop in the number of admissions at the health facilities. Currently there are two severely ill COVID-19 patients on admission at Mulago National referral Hospital and St Mary's Hospital Lacor. The country has sustained low transmission of COVID-19 with a positivity rate of less than 2% since February, 2022. This is attributed to the early decisive and sustained measures put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19 and the cooperations of all Ugandans to adhere to these measures, including taking up COVID-19 vaccination.
A Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) is one of the key social safeguards and risk management instruments required to help the Ministry of Health (MoH) to reduce projects risk and provide communities with an avenue for expressing their concerns and obtaining due redress, A GRM will also promote a mutually constructive relationship between stakeholders and Ministry of Health (MoH) Stakeholders will need a trusted way to air concerns linked to this project and have them resolved. A grievance redress mechanism will provide an avenue by offering reliable approaches where healthcare stakeholders and MoH can together find effective solutions.
The novel human Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is highly infectious and given the number of travelers coming from affected countries, the risk of importation of COVID-19 into the country is considered very high by WHO. If not averted, COVID-19 can affect Uganda’s economy in several ways, some of which are: by directly affecting production, by creating supply chain and market disruption, and by its financial impact on firms and markets. With disruption of several facets of life such as closure of schools, workplaces and banning of public gatherings, the health, socio-economic and environmental impact of COVID-19 cannot be underestimated

Outbreaks of infectious diseases like Ebola virus disease (EVD), yellow fever, measles, or currently COVID-19, are regular occurrences in Uganda. If not detected early and effectively contained, these diseases threaten the health and economic well-being of the entire population, and beyond. Disease response is a top-priority for public health managers at the MoH Uganda, and Logistics Preparedness has been identified as one of its key success factors.
The Republic of Uganda (the Recipient) through Ministry of Health will implement the Additional Financing (AF) to the Uganda COVID-19 Response and Emergency Preparedness Project (the Project) financed by the International Development Association (the Association).The Recipient shall carry out the Project in accordance with the Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs). To this end, this Environmental and Social Commitment Plan (ESCP) sets out material measures and actions to be carried out or caused to be carried out by the Recipient, including the timeframes of the actions and measures, institutional, staffing, training, monitoring and reporting arrangements, grievance management and the environmental and social assessments and instruments to be prepared or updated, disclosed, consulted upon, adopted and implemented under the ESCP and the ESSs, all in a manner acceptable to the Association.
The Uganda COVID-19 Response and Emergency Preparedness Project (herein the” UCREPP”) aims to prevent, detect and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthen national systems for public health. The AF will ensure vaccines are procured and deployed and, refugees and host communities are further provided for within this objective. UCREPP, in the amount of SDR 9.2 million (US$12.5 million equivalent) plus US$2.7million in grant from the Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility (PEFF) was prepared under the SPRP and approved on July 15, 2020. The PEFF component of the Project became effective on August 31, 2020 and closed on March 30, 2021 while the IDA credit became effective on August 3, 2021.
We are pleased to share our 52nd weekly epidemiological bulletin for the year 2020. This epidemiological bulletin serves to inform all stakeholders at district, national, and global levels on disease trends, public health surveillance and interventions undertaken in detecting, preventing and responding to public health events in Uganda on a weekly basis.A total of 24 AFP cases was reported during week 51 compared with 21 cases reported in week 50 The 24 AFP cases were reported from; Amuru 1, Arua 1, Bukwo 1, Butambala 2, Ibanda 1, Iganga 1, Jinga 1, Kampala 1, Kamuli 3, Katakwi 1, Kibaale 1, Lamwo 1, Luuka 1, Nakaseke 2, Namutumba 1, Napak 1, Ntungamo 3 and Sironko 1 The Non-polio AFP rate is 1.97/100,000 children 0 - 14 years compared with 2.85/100,000 children 0 -14 years in 2019 The adequate samples collection rate is 92.25% compared with 90.61% in 2019 NPENT rate is 12.60% compared with NPENT rate of 15.33% in 2019 Two formally silent districts (Jinja and Kamuli ) have joined the set of districts which have detected and investigated at least one AFP case in the year 2020
