Menstruation is a normal monthly process in which blood flows from the uterus, marking the beginning of a girl’s reproductive maturity. The menstrual cycle involves phases of bleeding, preparation, ovulation, and renewal, and may be irregular in early years. Proper hygiene, pain management, and accurate information are essential for healthy menstruation. Although menstruation signals fertility, it does not mean readiness for sex or marriage.
Uganda’s family planning and reproductive health markets remain fragmented, with persistent inequities in access and inefficient use of public subsidies. The National Total Market Approach (TMA) Strategy (2024–2025) outlines priority actions to align public, private, and social marketing actors under a coordinated market framework. By strengthening market segmentation, targeting subsidies to the most vulnerable populations, and promoting private sector participation, the strategy aims to expand contraceptive choice, improve sustainability, and enhance service delivery. Effective implementation of the TMA strategy is critical to achieving national reproductive health targets and universal health coverage.
The Costed Uganda Alternative Distribution Implementation Framework (2024/25–2029/30) provides strategic guidance for improving access to family planning and selected RMNCAH commodities through the private sector for public benefit. It addresses supply chain gaps, including stock-outs, coordination challenges, and accountability weaknesses. The framework promotes innovative distribution, sustainable financing, and strengthened last-mile assurance mechanisms. It aligns with NDP III, the MoH Strategic Plan, RHCS Strategy, and the Sustainable Development Goals to support universal health coverage in Uganda.
Uganda’s Reproductive Health Commodity Security (RHCS) Implementation Framework III (2024/25–2029/30) outlines priority actions to ensure uninterrupted availability of essential reproductive health commodities. The framework responds to persistent gaps in financing, coordination, supply chain capacity, and service utilization that hinder achievement of RMNCAH targets. Through a multi-sectoral and partnership-driven approach, it promotes sustainable financing, efficient supply chains, and strengthened accountability. Effective implementation of the framework is critical to accelerating progress toward universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Many children living in hard-to-reach areas do not access health care providers in the crucial window of 24 hours. Integrated community case management (iCCM) is part of a wider community health worker (CHW) strategy, in which CHWs provide lifesaving treatment for childhood killer diseases within 24 hours of onset of symptoms. Trained CHWs are supported, equipped and supplied with commodities to provide Curative services in communities and Health promotion in communities.
In Uganda, sustained scale-up of evidence-based basic child survival health interventions, driven by high levels of political commitment and new funding mechanisms have translated into improved child health outcomes. m. This National – level investment case provides the scale up costs for the country and will serve as a vital advocacy and resource mobilization tool to guide future efforts to fill the funding gap for iCCM by the Government of Uganda, Donors and development partners.
Integrated community case management (iCCM) of childhood infection saves lives in hard-to-reach communities in Uganda. The objective of this strategy is to strengthen
iCCM implementation and and set the path to institutionalizing rapid reduction in under five mortality in the national and district health during 2020 to 2060. The Village health teams in remote poor urban and rural communities provide the needed lifesaving treatments to sick children within 24 hours with efficacious treatment without which most die or are left with lifelong debilities.
Uganda developed and launched its fi rst Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) Sharpened Plan in November 2013 to accelerate the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This Sharpened plan builds on with the bold objectives of ending preventable maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent deaths and safeguarding the health and development of all children, adolescents, and women. This will ensure a Uganda where every woman, child, and adolescent realizes the right to health and wellbeing and can harness their social and economic opportunities to fully participate in shaping a prosperous nation. This plan calls for collective action and all stakeholders to align with the national and subnational mutual accountability framework to deliver their commitments.
